Active Residents/Fellows Dashboard
Replaces Section C of the previously published Data Resource Book
This dashboard summarizes the characteristics of all active residents/fellows, and shows aggregate statistics on their distribution by specialty, medical school type, gender, and race/ethnicity. In addition, this section includes information on residents entering pipeline and continuing graduate medical education (GME) programs.
Geographic distribution is based on the most recent US Census estimate per 100,000 population, including Puerto Rico.
Distribution by medical school type is summarized by specialty programs breakdown of active residents/fellows.
Demographic race/ethnicity and gender are available for active residents/fellows. The ACGME adopted a race/ethnicity reporting standard in line with that of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System as follows:
- If the individual self-identifies as Hispanic only, or Hispanic and any race category, report as Hispanic.
- If the individual self-identifies as not Hispanic; more than one race category, report as two or more races ("Multiple Race”).
Notes:
- Unknown ethnicity includes both unknown and blank, while ‘Other’ indicates a known ethnicity other than the ones available for selection.
- The source data of race/ethnicity reported are based upon self-reported data provided by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Graduating and Leaving Residents/Fellows Dashboard
Replaces Section D of the previously published Data Resource Book
This dashboard summarizes the characteristics of both graduating residents/fellows who successfully completed all accredited education, and residents/fellows who left their program prior to successful completion. Resident/fellow completion status for the previous academic year is reported during the fall of the current academic year; therefore, the following data include only those residents/fellows who graduated or left their programs between September 1 of the previous academic year and August 31 of the current academic year.
The dashboard describes residents/fellows graduating from ACGME-accredited specialty or subspecialty programs. In addition, it provides information about residents completing preliminary education and training and transitional year programs, which is a necessary prerequisite for entry into specialty programs that require a clinical base year.
Geographic distribution describes the concentration of graduating residents/fellows per 100,000 population, including Puerto Rico.
"Residents leaving prior to completion" are residents/fellows who left their programs prior to successful completion with statuses of either transferred, withdrawn, dismissed, deceased, or unsuccessfully completed program.
This dashboard replaces Section D of the previously published Data Resource Book.
